We had a freak tornado go though our little valley in late November of last year. It was about 1/2 mile wide and cut up the mt on a angle . The damage is to left just out of photo there is a rock bar at about 1 o'clock running down mt . The tornado damage created a pinch point on mt that funneled game down to less than 100 yards from 1/2 mile on each side . I found it the first week of December after tornado and put this camera up and 2 more . Started getting pic of this guy every day on one of the cameras . Kill him about 10 seconds from when this pic was taken . From mid march till mid may I got pic every day of coyotes or bobcats or deer or all three . Little hard to get too but I will drag a stand up there this summer . I killed that buck off the ground .

This guy may not score much, but he is at the top of my to kill list this season!! We call him the mega 7! We have lots of photos of him and video as well. He is a bully and ran off all other mature bucks in our river bottom area!
Who is at the top of your "Hit list"?

Slingshot from last year. Hoping he shows up in front of my cameras again this year. I let him walk last November at 20yds. Planning on putting my cams out this week.

T-Roy, I'm curious, why did you let him walk?
By:
t-roy
Date:02-Jul-17
|
Irish, I'm almost positive that he was only 3 1/2 at most. He has the potential to blow up into a giant this year. I saw him shortly after all of our seasons closed, so I'm very hopeful he's still around. Toughest deer I've ever let walk, but you can't shoot a 190" if you shoot em when they're a 160".

By:

T-Roy, I understand. However, where I hunt at, if you pass on a 160 buck, most likely someone else will shoot him that same day. Different circumstances I guess.
By:
t-roy
Date:03-Jul-17
|
Irish.....I do have a decent amount of private land that I own, but there are a bunch of guys that hunt the boundaries to my property, on adjacent land, so there is a good chance that the deer that live on, or frequent my place will, at some point will leave my place, at least temporarily and be vulnerable to other guys getting a crack at him or other potential shooter bucks. But I know that if I shoot him, he has no chance of turning into a giant, so I try my best to let the ones with potential walk, and take my chances. Every year, a few of them get killed, but a few seem to make it through as well.

Brotsky

+1 t-roy, if you shoot a 160 there is a zero percent chance he makes 180:) If you let him go there is always a chance! That said, I'm shooting the 160 because that is big enough for this mere mortal! Ha!
By:
Irishman
Date:03-Jul-17
|
T-roy, I hope you don't think I was being critical. I pass on elk every year. Logic being that I will never kill a big one if I fill my tag on a little one. I wouldn't pass on your deer though, because I haven't killed one that big.
By:
BullBuster
Date:03-Jul-17

t-roy, good for you in passing but based on that one picture, I don't think he is only in the 160s.
By:
t-roy
Date:03-Jul-17

No offense taken at all Irish! I think it's all relative. I have killed a half dozen elk, 2 over 300", but I'm pretty certain that if I had gotten the opportunity to shoot a much smaller bull before I got the chance at either of those two 300" bulls, my tags would have been punched and attached to a lesser animal.
I'm very fortunate be be able to have the hunting ground that I do, and have taken some pretty good bucks over the years, so, personally, I can be selective on the animal I choose to try and kill. Also, I get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction in knowing that I had at least a small part in getting that animal to possibly his full potential.
BBuster... here's a different angle pic of him. He lacks mass and he's only about 15" inside but IMO, he has huge upside potential!

Just returned from my north bear camp and threw out a cam near my house. Got pics of this healthy looking buck a few hours later. Look for Saskatchewan to produce monster bucks this year after 2 easy winters and plenty of moisture producing great feed for deer.

A few I am hoping to run into so far. Funny to see the relativity of size, I'm happy with 100" deer on the public mountain land I hunt. 130" is a monster.

hitman,
I live in WI not far from the border and work in MN so I'm very familiar with the rivalry. I was born in Mpls and lived my first 11 years there and lived through the Viking Super Bowl losses. Converted to a Packer fan many years ago and it's a lot easier than being a Viking fan and I can relate to the "pain" of being a Viking fan... ;^)

Nice photos!
I am interested in getting a couple new cameras. Last fall mine were stolen right here at home. What brands and models do you like? What do you dislike and why? What do you think of regular flash, infrared, and black flash?
I have had the best photos from old original large Cuddeback 3-4mp digital cameras with real flash. Not sure what they have been spooking. I have also used Moultrie M-80 infared which took good daytime pictures along with decent black and white nighttime pictures. In a pinch, I bought a couple Wild Game Innovations cameras at Walmart. They have slow trigger speed so animals are off to the side, daytime picture quality is fair, and the nighttime infared photos look like X-ray images. They were cheap, so great if they are stolen, but lousy picture quality.
Maybe new future cameras could include a password protection that prevents the camera from being used, or even a self-destruct feature!

Fisher, as far as camera's go, I like the little light ones, like the small bushnells. Easy to pack up a hill or for miles, and I've had good luck with them. I had a couple of those Moulrie M-80's and liked them too (have a pretty good video of a big bull bugling as it walked past the camera in the middle of the night (good sound), and a grizzly standing on hind legs). I like my little Primos Truth cam, and the Cabela's camera I have. I bought a little stealth cam that was nothing but trouble, don't know when it will work or not. I never spend much on them, as my son bought a Leaf River camera that cost $350 that was a nightmare to operate, heavy, and now doesn't work at all. I've only ever had one stolen, but lots of issues with bears breaking them or attempting to.

3 buddies and I just got a new property in Columbus County, NC. Hasn't been hunted in 5 years, and is surrounded by a big timber stand that isn't hunted, and swamp. Owner is only allowing 4 of us to hunt it and we can do whatever we want to the property. We set up 4 cameras on 4 random spots where we saw well used trails. the following few are what we got after a 1 week soak

It is a scrape below a licking branch that they use. They have been using the licking branch but not really making a scrape below. Its more there feet tearing it up than actually pawing the ground. The drought has really started drying up my clover plot and it has gotten sparse.
