So many people overlook the importance of properly balanced seed mixes. You want to be careful not to plant non competitive forages with fast growing and competitive ones. An example of this is sugar beets. Never plant sugar beets with fast growing brassicas.

Know what full seeding rates are of anything you want to plant. Here is an example.

Mix ABC Ingredients being triticale, radish, winfred brassica and turnips. How would you formulate this if you wanted 4 species in your mix?

Full seeding rate of triticale is 100 lbs per acre, radish 8-10 lbs per acre winfred brassica 8-10 lbs per acre and turnips 4-6 lbs per acre.

I would use 25 lbs triticale, 2 lbs radish, 2 lbs winfred brassica and 1-1.5 lbs turnip. This gives us about 1/4 rate of each of these species. The final stand will be a balanced sward with good biodiversity.

Another example is mix A.C.C If we want to have alfalfa, chicory and ladino clover in it, here is how i'd formulate it if we want 1/3 of each of those ingredients.

Alfalfa is 16-22 lbs per acre chicory 2-4 lbs and ladino 4-6 lbs per acre

Your mix should contain 6 lbs alfalfa 1 lb chicory and 2 lbs ladino clover or a final mix percentage around 65% alfalfa 23% ladino and 12% chicory
