I got pix of a fawn that looks very, very young on September 23ed. looks half or 1/3 the size of other fawns that have all lost their spots by now. anyone care to guess how old this little guy could be? I have never seen one so small this late in the year before. it did not show up on cam then next time I checked.

Born in august, Momma was probably a fawn last year and came into heat for the "second rut", and was bred in February.

Yep, young momma doe, late breeding... Notice not a twin pictured, another indication of first time mother...

we see them like that this time of the year all the time in TN, especially in areas with high doe populations. I saw one Saturday morning, momma was already in her grey winter coat and the fawn still had it's summer red on.

Agreed, mom was probably breed late january or early feb. It wont have a problem making the winter as long as the snows don't come too early. What may be its down fall is coyotes. Shawn

Saw one like that in November last year here in PA, bright white spots all over. Was not a young doe, but a giant old doe. I wanted to shoot the doe so bad, but it was a death sentence for the fawn, and I was not going to shoot the fawn, so I let them walk.

I read somewhere, maybe it was here, that a doe can give birth any time of the year, it's just not common. I didn't think it was possible for a buck to breed a doe unless his testosterone level was high, but I guess a hot doe changes that.

I posted pictures on here last spring of a fawn that still had spots in March or April. Although it was pretty close to the size of the others. We decided it was a "late hatch" also.

I will age it....for about 5 days at 35 degrees. delicious!!

1-2 months would be my guess. A doe willgive birth approx. 7-months after conception. However, in southern climes where there is moderate weather and plenty of food, a doe may get bred as late as March or even April.
As long as the bucks still have antlers and there are unbred does who cycle, they can get bred.

bowriter - "in southern climes where there is moderate weather and plenty of food, a doe may get bred as late as March or even April"
Although uncommon, it does sometimes happen in the northern states too, as cuda383 photo confirms (assuming that is in NY)... Whether the fawns survive the winter to break the cycle is another can of worms likely depending on the severity of the weather, but I saved a few pictures of spotted northern whitetail fawns in snow during late winter... One, if I remember correctly came from as far north as Minnesota... I think Bear posted it a few years ago...

The fawn looks to be doing pretty good, and growing... Be nice to see if you can get more pix later when the snow flies...

So if it is a buck we will have to give the 2.25, 3.25, 4.25, etc. y/o qualifying statement down the road? This is really getting hard! :D
Good pics.

Amazes me how some animals survive. Gotta give them credit. They're tougher than we think.
I'd say the fawn in the above pic was about 1 month old at the time the first pics were taken.
