Jake's Difficulty Rating

Whitetail Deer 1

Jake rated each animal based on three criteria:

1.) degree of training probably required:
2.) element of danger...(either from the expected weather, terrain, or animal)
3.) the cost.

Zero would be the lowest, and three would the highest.

He did not take into account the difficulty involved in taking a P&Y caliber animal (i.e. mule deer, etc).

Jake's Whitetail Deer Summary

As is true with the vast majority of bowhunters, I cut my teeth on whitetail deer. However, for years, I was always killing bucks in the 100 - 115 inch range because the hunting pressure in my area doesn't allow many deer to get bigger. I could pass on decent bucks, but doing so never meant that they would make it to the next year, so I fell prey to the same mindset as others....take the buck now, because he WON'T be around next year. Then, one eventful day, Pat Lefemine mentioned Kansas to me....and I really can't ever see me missing a season from now on. Not only is the camp camaraderie outstanding, but the number of trophy sized bucks out there is just mind numbing. I must admit, that I have started to hunt my local area a little harder in the past year (because I didn't travel as much last Fall), and as a result I am seeing some nicer bucks. Is it because I have the time to put in more time....or is it because the hunting pressure is decreasing in my area.....? My answer would be 'Yes'. Either way, I see a lot more venison hamburg in my future.....The photo that is shown is a nice 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 year old buck from SW Kansas.
