Jake's Difficulty Rating

Columbia Blacktail Deer 0

Jake rated each animal based on three criteria:

1.) degree of training probably required:
2.) element of danger...(either from the expected weather, terrain, or animal)
3.) the cost.

Zero would be the lowest, and three would the highest.

He did not take into account the difficulty involved in taking a P&Y caliber animal (i.e. mule deer, etc).

Jake's Columbia Blacktail Deer Summary

I took my Columbia Blacktail Deer about an hour west of Eureka, California. I had hunted from several treestands, and never had a shot opportunity for the five days that I was scheduled to hunt. Since the outfitter was breaking camp on the sixth day, they let me stay over and continue to hunt while they broke camp. I glassed two very nice bucks and stalked to 43 yards. I stayed as still as a statue for at least 30-40 minutes, because they could sense that something wasn't as it should be.....but finally, after about 40 minutes, the lead buck took a couple steps and the distance was exactly 40 yards. My shot was high and I spined the buck....so I ran down to him and finished him off. He was a real battler....his left ear was shredded from fighting. That was the first time that I learned to start carrying a set of taxidermy eyes with me for some after the hunt photos. He was pretty good eating as I recall.
